Case Study: Metro Rod

Integrated Management Systems for Metro Rod

After a change in company ownership, Metro Rod required certification to three Standards: Health & Safety, Environmental Management and Quality Management.

Metro Rod had received approval for their certification to OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 to remain valid for a limited period following acquisition by new owner Franchise Brands in 2017. A recertification audit was due in February 2018 when these prior certifications would become obsolete.

When Franchise Director Chris Hirst first contacted Stephen Singer in December 2017, there were two urgent objectives:

  • To ascertain the company’s preparedness for the recertification audit in February 2018
  • To put in place the necessary systems, processes and documentation to meet the audit requirements by that date.

Stephen carried out a gap analysis against the three Standards to assess exactly what was needed. He then prioritised the most urgent updates and amendments to the management systems, supporting the Health & Safety Adviser in a temporary role.

“With limited SHEQ resources and a new Group owner, we had to start from scratch,”  “Stephen took charge of the whole process, adapting and documenting the processes and helping us put them into practice.”

It took just two months. Stephen “put everything in place and walked us through the whole process,” explained Chris. “This included the paperwork, Management Review and an Internal Audit.”

As a result, Metro Rod achieved recertification to all three Standards (and the SSIP Safety Schemes in Procurement) in February 2018 with no non-conformities.

Unforeseen challenges

“With limited SHEQ resources and a new Group owner, we had to start from scratch,” said Chris. “Stephen took charge of the whole process, adapting and documenting the processes and helping us put them into practice.”

Because certification had applied to the former group, the preparatory work had to begin again.

Recruitment presented a further challenge. Since the new ownership, the SHEQ Manager role was not permanently filled until David Corbett took up his post in November 2018.

Chris agreed with Stephen that Infralogics would take care of all the recertification tasks until a new SHEQ Manager was appointed.

We’ve seen substantial benefits,” explains Chris. “The impact of Stephen’s work went far beyond the realm of compliance and Standards:

  • It increased customer retention
  • It strengthened the company’s credibility
  • And it resulted in new business being won from blue chip clients.

More than box-ticking and compliance

Chris describes the benefits arising from Stephen’s work.

“Stephen has an in-depth knowledge of each specific certification and how they are best applied in our business. These accreditations validate Metro Rod as preferred suppliers to blue chip companies in retail and facilities management.

Without Infralogics’ support, we risked losing key customers and the ability to service national accounts. Maintaining these customer relationships has been vital to the growth of our company.

I highly recommend Stephen and Infralogics to any manager for whom ISO certification means more than simply going through a box-ticking exercise to prove compliance,” said Chris.

Stephen continues regular work with Metro Rod on a consultancy basis alongside David Corbett, SHEQ Manager, supporting the continual improvement in the business using the Integrated Management System.

He continues to help revise and develop systems, procedures and documentation, as well as conducting Internal Audits and Management Reviews and assisting with external audits.

In February 2019, Metro Rod achieved certification to the ISO 45001 Health & Safety Management System Standard which replaced OHSAS 18001. At the time, Metro Rod was one of only two organisations in the industry to achieve ISO 45001 compliance.

Chris emphasised: “Stephen has worked hard on our behalf to make sure we achieved the initial certification and later to implement the Integrated Management System. His knowledge and abilities along with his approachable and tactful way of communicating while holding us to account are especially appreciated.”
